R.I.N.G. RETIREES  LIVING MEMORIAL
FROM March 8, 2011 TO August 24, 2011
Pictures by members of the R.I.N.G. Retirees Association Memorial Committee and Light and Time Studios
March 8, 2011: Clay is added onto a full size Styrofoam base, and the details begin to be worked out in the clay. Hands were added temporarily to judge size and relationships to the rest of the statue. Photos © Light and Time Design
March 17, 2011: More and more of the details emerge as clay is added and sculptured. Notice the detail being added to the jacket collar and pockets, the powder horn strap across the chest, and the detail in the leggings and shoes. Photos © Light and Time Design
March 30, 2011: Bob Urquhart and Dave Gray travel to Light & Time Studio in Royal, Arkansas, to view the finished clay model, suggest changes, and to approve the final version.
March 30, at the studio: (Above left) David Harris makes some additions and changes and continues to improve the looks of the figure.

(Above right) Bre Harris works on making the face "more New England-ish" and what we thought was more "rugged."

(Right) Everyone is happy at the conclusion of the visit and work can now begin on making molds and pouring bronze.
May 26: The clay statue is taken apart in pieces that have to be cast separately. The hand at lower left is on the rifle, and the hand in the foreground in the right hand picture below is on the plow handle. Parts are then coated with a resin that will withstand being filled with hot wax, and later, the hot bronze.

June 3: The minuteman's hat was cast separately. The red "plugs" on the top of the hat will be the holes in the mold that the wax will leave by as the hot bronze is poured into the mold to take its place. Coated with resin, and then reinforced by fiber glass, the mold is ready. Photos © Light and Time Design
July 5 and 6: Despite flooding, loss of electricity, and 100 degree-plus days, the bronze casting begins with the small pieces. There will be 47 different pieces that will have to be welded together. Photos © Light and Time Design
July 17: The main torso also has to be separated into pieces that can be easily poured, and then will be welded together. Photos © Light and Time Design
August 8: The many pieces begin to be assembled. The head and hat was probably the easiest place to start. Photos © Light and Time Design
August 13: The fully assembled statue is set and welded on its base, and awaits the final polishing, coatings and coloration. Photos © Light and Time Design
August 14: The final version: note the different color patina added to help define the parts of the statue. Statue was shipped on August 16 to the R.I. Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter, ready for installation on the 24th. The rededication ceremony on August 28 was cancelled.  Photos © Light and Time Design

It is worth a trip to the cemetery to view the Memorial now that it is completed. The statue is an outstanding work of art.
