Dental, Vision Coverage Expanded
Published: March 23, 2018
More in: Armed Forces News
Dental and vision coverage for active-duty service members, retirees and their dependents is expanding. Later this year, TRICARE-eligible beneficiaries will be eligible for enrollment in the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP), the same plan that covers more than three million federal civil-service employees. Registration would take place during this year’s Federal Benefits Open Season — Nov. 12 through Dec. 10. Coverage would begin Jan. 1, 2019.

TRICARE-eligible retirees should note that the TRICARE Retiree Dental Program would cease to exist on Dec. 31, and that enrollment in the new coverage is not automatic. Retirees covered under the outgoing program must choose new coverage under FEDVIP.

The change will extend coverage for 1.3 million eligible retired beneficiaries who currently are not enrolled in the old plan.
Coverage in FEDVIP will affect most TRICARE beneficiaries. The vision plan includes eyeglasses or contact lenses, in addition to routine eye examinations now provided under TRICARE Prime and TRICARE Select.

Welcome, members of the uniformed services
30 March 2018

You've probably already heard that on December 31, 2018, the U.S. Department of Defense's TRICARE Retiree Dental Program (TRDP) will end. Don't worry! You can enroll in dental coverage for next year, effective January 1, 2019, but it will be under a different program, the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP), offered by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Vision coverage is also available to you for the first time under FEDVIP. Certain retirees and their families, and family members of active duty service men and women, will now be eligible to enroll in a FEDVIP vision plan. You don't need to take action yet. However, if you would like dental and/or vision coverage next year, effective January 1, 2019, you must select and enroll in a FEDVIP plan during the next Federal Benefits Open Season. Open season is your annual opportunity to sign up for FEDVIP, and this year it runs from November 12 through December 10, 2018. If you're currently enrolled in a TRDP plan, you will not be automatically enrolled in a FEDVIP plan for 2019. You must enroll during open season. FEDVIP is popular among Federal employees. The more than 3.3 million people already enrolled give the program high marks for quality and value. With 10 dental and four vision carriers to choose from, and some plans offering both high and standard options, FEDVIP offers great flexibility when selecting the right coverage for you and your family.

Note: Plan details and rates for the 2019 plan year will be available in October 2018.
